Troubleshooting Three Common Heat Pump Issues

Troubleshoot post-it

A heat pump can be a versatile all-in-one heating and cooling solution for your home – but only if it’s functioning properly. Here are three common problems that can occur with your heat pump – and what to do about them before contacting us for a repair.

Problem 1: Your heat pump doesn’t turn on

If your heat pump doesn’t run at all,

  • Check the thermostat settings – Make sure your thermostat is set for “heat,” or for the target temperature to cool your home. Set the thermostat for at least five degrees above (for heating) or below (for cooling) your room’s current temperature to make sure the system engages.
  • Check your circuit breakers – Reset any tripped circuit breakers that supply power to the unit. If the breaker continues to trip, you will need to call for service.
  • Make sure that any power switches are turned on – Make sure any wall switches that affect operation of the heating pump are in the “on” position.

Problem 2: Your heat pump isn’t heating or cooling your home properly

If your house is warmer or colder than you think it should be,

  • Check the thermostat settings – See Problem 1 above.
  • Make sure all vents are open and unblocked – Make sure that air is free to flow throughout your house.
  • Clean or replace the heat pump filter – Clogged filters can make it more difficult for a heat pump blower’s to distribute air. If your heat pump filter is dirty, change it following manufacturer’s instructions (hint: filter changes are included in a service plan, along with other great benefits – contact us to learn more).

Problem 3: Your Heat Pump cycles (turns on and off) too frequently

When a heat pump cycles more frequently than you think it should,

  • Clean or replace the heat pump filter – See Problem 2 above (a clogged filter can cause your heat pump to overheat, causing erratic cycling).
  • Check the thermostat settings – See Problem 1 above.
