6 Questions You Must Ask Your Potential Plumber

When you’re in need of plumbing services, it’s important to entrust your home to a qualified professional. Here are the six most important questions to ask before hiring a professional plumber.

1. Are you licensed?

Technicians should be registered with the state or local government to perform plumbing repairs for residential clients. In New York State, this requires at least seven years of experience or a combination of education and experience deemed equivalent.

2. What is the total cost?

The plumber should give you a written estimate of the project cost, including itemized details about parts and labor. Be sure to ask whether the estimate is binding and what happens if project-associated costs are higher than expected. It’s also important to understand the payment structure; for example, how much is paid up front, and how much is due later or at the project’s end?

3. Does the cost include clean-up?

Most reputable companies will dispose of or recycle old water heaters, piping, and other debris created by plumbing repair. To be sure that you won’t be on the hook for cleanup, though, confirm that’s the case before signing on the dotted line.

4. Are you bonded and insured?

The plumbing company must carry appropriate insurance that will cover the cost of any potential accidents or injuries that occur during the project.

5. Is work guaranteed?

Companies who stand by the quality of their work will provide a parts and labor guarantee. Be sure to get this in writing so you can refer to it in the future if you need repeated repairs.

6. Who will be doing the work?

Make sure that the person providing the quote will be the same person who is working on your plumbing. If the company is sending out a different technician, review that person’s credentials before agreeing to the work.

By asking your potential plumber or contractor these six questions, you can help weed out those who may create more problems than they solve. In the long run, just like with HVAC services or any other specialized repair, it’s best to hire an experienced, knowledgeable, qualified technician.
